The Now Now

Recorded largely during the North American leg of the Humanz tour, this project marked a significant shift toward a more cohesive, melodic sound centered on Damon Albarn’s vocals rather than a massive list of guest features. The narrative lore of the virtual band took a turn during this era as well, with the character Murdoc Niccals being temporarily replaced by Ace from The Powerpuff Girls while Murdoc was incarcerated. Musically, the tracks lean into upbeat synth-pop and breezy funk, exemplified by the lead single "Humility," which features the distinctive jazz guitar work of George Benson.

Unlike its predecessor, the production here is streamlined and focused, often capturing a sense of isolation and introspection while traveling through various American cities. This sense of place is reflected in titles like "Idaho," "Kansas," and "Lake Zurich," creating a sonic travelogue that balances melancholic lyrics with bright, rhythmic arrangements. With over 28,000 collectors tracking this release, it remains a standout for fans who prefer the project's more personal and less collaborative side.
