Carrie & Lowell

Stripping away the maximalist orchestration and electronic experimentation of previous works, this 2015 release marks a profound return to sparse, acoustic arrangements. Recorded largely in a home studio, the compositions grapple with the complexities of grief, memory, and reconciliation following the death of the artist's mother. The lyrical content navigates the specific geography of Oregon and the turbulent history of family dynamics, creating an atmosphere that is both intensely private and universally resonant. Released on Asthmatic Kitty Records, the album eschews traditional percussion and grandiosity in favor of delicate fingerpicking and hushed vocals. Tracks like 'Fourth of July' and 'Death With Dignity' have become benchmarks for modern indie folk, praised for their raw emotional honesty and minimalist production. Its enduring legacy lies in its ability to transform personal trauma into a meditative exploration of the human condition, solidifying its place as a pivotal moment in contemporary songwriting.
