Album story
Departing from the traditional piano-led quartet, this 1960 session captures a pivotal moment in avant-garde jazz where the boundaries of tonality and structure were being pushed to their limits. Utilizing a unique lineup that features Ron Carter on cello alongside George Duvivier’s bass, the music achieves a somber, chamber-like quality that complements the leader's adventurous excursions on flute, alto saxophone, and bass clarinet. The compositions range from the angular title track to the haunting "Eclipse," a tribute to Charles Mingus, showcasing a blend of Third Stream influences and hard-swinging improvisation. It remains a cornerstone of the New Thing movement, illustrating a transition from the bebop tradition into a more abstract, expressive sonic landscape.
