Personal Jesus

Martin Gore famously drew inspiration for the lyrics from Priscilla Presley’s memoir, specifically the way she described Elvis as her own personal Jesus. This blues-inflected track marked a bold departure from the band's synth-pop roots, introducing a grittier, guitar-driven edge that would define their sound for years to come.

Released at the tail end of the eighties, the production leans heavily into a stomping, industrial-tinged rhythm that feels both mechanical and soulful. It captures the tension of a band transitioning from club-focused electronics to the massive, stadium-filling alternative rock sound that dominated the early nineties.
