Mezzanine

Dark, claustrophobic, and undeniably cinematic, this record marked a sharp departure from the soulful warmth of the group's earlier work. It famously pushed the band to the brink of internal collapse during recording, resulting in a sound that feels genuinely tense and haunted.

Emerging at the tail end of the nineties, the production leans heavily into jagged guitars and heavy, distorted basslines that defined the Bristol trip-hop scene. It remains a masterclass in atmosphere, blending electronic textures with a moody, rock-inflected edge that still sounds ahead of its time.
