What's Going On

Motown executives initially refused to release this record, fearing its heavy social commentary would alienate listeners. It stands as a rare example of an artist successfully fighting for total creative control to address the Vietnam War and urban poverty directly.

The lush, orchestral arrangements and seamless transitions create a dreamlike atmosphere that feels like a continuous, cinematic suite. Recorded during a period of intense personal reflection, the production captures a raw, intimate urgency that redefined the possibilities of soul music.
