Album story
Gil Evans and the trumpeter reimagined George Gershwin’s opera through a sophisticated lens of modal jazz. Their collaboration strips away the theatrical artifice to reveal a haunting, blues-drenched emotional core that feels entirely fresh.
The massive big band arrangements provide a lush, cinematic backdrop for those iconic, melancholic horn solos. Recorded during a golden era for Columbia, the record captures a seamless blend of orchestral precision and spontaneous improvisation.
