Thirteenth Step

Maynard James Keenan and Billy Howerdel crafted a masterclass in tension and release that explores the dark, cyclical nature of addiction. The record manages to feel deeply intimate and claustrophobic, anchored by lyrics that cut straight to the bone.

Released during the height of the early 2000s alternative rock boom, the production leans into atmospheric textures and intricate, layered arrangements. It stands as a definitive piece of progressive rock from that era, balancing heavy, driving riffs with haunting, melodic restraint.
