Album story
Michael Stipe famously buried his vocals deep in the mix, treating his voice more like another instrument than a vessel for clear lyrics. This mysterious approach turned the record into a puzzle that fans spent decades trying to decode.
Recorded on a shoestring budget in North Carolina, the sound defines the early 1980s college rock aesthetic with its jangling guitars and atmospheric production. It remains a cornerstone of the I.R.S. Records catalog, helping to establish the blueprint for alternative rock before the genre hit the mainstream.
