Album story
Breaking away from the slow-burning, ethereal soundscapes that defined their earlier work, this 2008 release introduced a more immediate, acoustic-driven energy to the band's discography. The lead single "Gobbeldigook" signaled a shift toward tribal rhythms and folk-inspired spontaneity, contrasting sharply with the bowed guitar textures of previous albums. Much of the record was captured in a shorter timeframe than their usual multi-year processes, resulting in a raw, vibrant atmosphere that feels both intimate and celebratory.
Recording sessions spanned multiple locations, including London’s Abbey Road Studios, where the centerpiece "Ára Bátur" was tracked live with a ninety-piece orchestra and a boys' choir. The album also marks a linguistic milestone for the group, concluding with their first-ever track performed entirely in English. This blend of grand orchestral ambition and stripped-back folk sensibilities solidified the band's ability to evolve while maintaining their signature sense of wonder.
